RIB Open Day

The club RIB is a valuable resource for a dive club and next year there will be a concerted effort to use it more.  Trips are already being planned for both weekend and single day trips so all that remains is to get club divers onto those trips.

There are a few unfortunate myths about RIB diving,

  1. The Long Drop !! – WRONG – When entering the water from our RIB, the drop is minimal.  In fact, its a shorter drop than most hard boats entries.
  2. The nightmare getting back in !! – WRONG – Our club RIB has a ladder. There is no need to climb back in over the side, just remove your fins and BCD and climb the short ladder.

In order to dispel these myths and familiarize club diving members with the RIB, it is intended to hold a RIB Open Day on Sunday 20th November.

This Open Day will take place at Lake 32 in the Cotswold Water Park.  The lake has a max depth of 4m and has both a beach and jetty entry along with changing rooms and showers on site which we can use.  The lake is sheltered so hopefully we will be protected from the November wind and needless to say, there will be no tide or current to deal with, there may be a few waves but that will depend on how throttle happy the boat driver gets!!

The plan is to make the RIB available between 11am and 3pm for club members to come along and see their RIB.  Diving members can also bring their diving kit and see how easy it is to roll in and climb out, this should also give the boat drivers a bit of practice with diver operations.  We are happy for divers to do this is full kit or just dry suit, the theory is the same.

The post code is GL7 6DF and if you use house number 32 then it should take you straight to the Waterland Lake (just 2.5 miles off the dual carriageway).  We hope to see as many diving members there as possible as we really do need everyone’s support to ensure that we utilise the club RIB as effectively as possible.  And who knows, if the rain is horizontal enough then I may flash up the club BBQ and throw on some bacon and beef!!

I already have a team to deliver the RIB to site and to drive it on the day, if you would like to come along then I would appreciate it if you could let me know using any of my contact details on the club website or respond to the event on the clubs Facebook page.  Hope to see as many people there as possible.
